As the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic while still trying to find its footing with the economy, the numbers of confirmed cases continue to grow, even skyrocket in some areas. A total of 216 countries and territories have reported
cases of COVID-19. As of November 11, there are over 50 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and over 1.2 million deaths. The most of both can be found in the US.
Currently, the US has over 10 million cases of COVID-19, with over 240,000 deaths. The daily total number of cases continues to rise since tracking began back in March. The highest recorded daily cases happened on Wednesday, November 11, with over 140,000 new cases. A significant increase in COVID-19 cases can be seen in many counties and
states where President Donald Trump held rallies for his presidential campaign. The areas of these rallies, which were held in Mankato, Minnesota; Bemidji, Minnesota; and Henderson, Nevada, to name a few, showed a significant increase of COVID-19 cases post-event. This could be attributed to many attendees not wearing a mask or socially distancing, both of which are recommended public health guidelines in order to slow the spread of the virus. When looking state-level, it can be seen that Texas currently has the most cases while New York has the most deaths, as New York was hit hardest early on in the pandemic. After Texas, the other states with the most cases include California, Florida, New York, and Illinois.
When looking at COVID-19 clinical trials, and clinical trials disrupted due to COVID-19, for these top five states, it can be seen that Texas, the state with the most cases, currently has the second highest number of COVID-19 clinical trials (470) and the third highest for disrupted clinical trials due to COVID-19 (781). New York, the state with the most deaths, has the fourth highest number of COVID-19 trials (419) and disrupted clinical trials (504). California has the most COVID-19 clinical trials and disrupted clinical trials with 592 and 937, as shown in Figure 1.
Now, with the announcement of President-elect Joe Biden’s seven-point-action agenda to end the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of cases and deaths may start to decrease if this is put into action.
