Global: There now more than 15.5 million known Covid-19 cases worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University, and over 633,000 deaths.
US: The US surpassed four million coronavirus cases on Thursday, after more than 1,100 new Covid-19-related deaths were reported in a single day on Wednesday for the first time since late May.
UK: Former UK prime minister Tony Blair believes coronavirus will not be eliminated. He urged the UK government to focus on containment measures to see the country through a second wave.
South Africa: President Cyril Ramaphosa says the country’s coronavirus cases have risen to over 400,000.
Australia: The state of Victoria has reported 300 new coronavirus cases and six deaths, a record one-day number of fatalities for the state. Yesterday’s numbers were 484 new cases and five deaths, three of which were connected to aged care clusters.

By GlobalDataChina: China reported 21 new coronavirus cases in the mainland for July 23, down from 22 cases a day earlier. Of the new infections, the National Health Commission said 13 were in the far western region of Xinjiang and two were in Dalian city in the northeastern province of Liaoning. The remaining six were imported cases.

China: The port city of Dalian in Liaoning province, home to nearly six million people, will introduce a wave of coronavirus testing to stamp out a small cluster of cases, authorities said, with state media reporting communities will be locked down.
South Africa: President Ramaphosa said the cabinet has decided that all public schools should be closed for the next four weeks from Monday with some exceptions.
Japan: Senior Olympic official John Coates has reiterated that Tokyo must stage a simplified summer Games next year with the health and safety of athletes the most important consideration in the planning, Reuters reports.

Global: The devastating economic toll the coronavirus crisis is taking around the world could spark huge waves of fresh migration once borders reopen, the head of the Red Cross warned in an interview with AFP.
Costa Rica: The Central American Bank for Economic Integration approved a $300m loan to Costa Rica to help stabilise the local economy, which has been hit hard by restrictions aimed at containing the new coronavirus.
Turkey: Turkey’s parliament approved a law allowing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to extend a layoff ban imposed to combat the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
