Oura has developed a wearable smart ring to address the urgent need for remote patient monitoring (RPM) and digital biomarker technologies. The smart ring enables early detection of COVID-19 infection by using sensor technologies to deliver health insights.

The wearable smart ring weighs around 4-6gm and comes with a seven-day battery life. It is waterproof and is made using durable titanium with a scratch-resistant PVD coating.

Oura collaborated with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to identify the digital biomarkers that indicate early signs of the disease using the smart ring. The collaboration sought to address the growing infection rate among key frontline workers.

It conducted a study starting with 2,000 key frontline workers who were asked to wear the smart rings during their day-to-day activities. The ring measured body temperature, respiratory rate and heart rate of the participants.

The data collected by the ring was tracked through an accompanying Oura app. It helped the health workers in identifying any anomalies swiftly that may indicate early signs of infection and accordingly contain further transmission to prevent a larger outbreak.

Oura plans to expand the study to include more than 150,000 users in a bid to develop a wider data pool.
